Description: PBS Space Time, one of YT's premiere science shows with over 350,000+ views per week is looking to add to its corps of freelance writers. This job is open to as many folks as can do great work, so please apply! Space Time, hosted by Dr. Matt O'Dowd, has been on the air for 5 years and is one of the most successful and challenging shows in the science education world. Our focus is explaining cutting edge astrophysics, cosmology, astronomy, and quantum mechanics in way that both tells a great story while explaining high level technical information (think advanced undergrad or masters level concepts minus the math). See more at www.youtube.com/pbsspacetime
We're looking for a couple of talented folks who fit the following description:
  • Masters or PhD In Astrophysics, Astronomy, Physics or Related Field: we are a highly technical show, with a diverse audience that wants to be challenged. So we need people who can dive into high level concepts and give clear (enough) explanations. A large percentage of our audience has a science and engineering backgrounds, so they enjoy the rigor.
  • Great Storytellers: we also need writers who know how to frame these high level concepts as burning questions that our audience needs to know the answer to because another large percentage of our audience has almost no science background and needs the story to carry them through the technical aspects of the show
  • Generate Highly Clickable Headlines: Youtube success is made by framing our topics in the most exciting/curiousity-inducing way possible. So we usually have our writers pitch us with the title of the topic becuase this is life ruled by the "algorithm."
What will be required of you if you get the job:
  • Pitch 5-10 Ideas: You'll meet with Matt & Andrew (the producer) and discuss which ideas will make the best Space Time scripts
  • Script of 1500-2000 words: You'll work with Matt to bring the scripts to their highest level.
Pay for the job is $750 per episode. And we're flexible with the timing, so it can be as many as 2 episodes a month or as few as one script every other month. Work is 100% remote.
How to apply:Send the listed requirements to pbsspacetime@gmail.com with the subject line "Space Time Writer Application"
  • Brief paragraph about yourself: tell us about yourself, your scientific background, and current areas of astrophysics/physics you're passionate about
  • 3-5 Writing Samples: Send us your best work in the area of astrophysics/physics
  • 3-5 Pitch Titles: Send us a sampling of the kind of clickable headlines you'd like pitch us. Optional to include a 1-2 sentance description of what the episode would be about, if the title doesn't explain it all.
